How to choose an e-book reader?

If you are a lover of books then you may have heard of an e-book reader. This nifty little device enables you to carry your entire book collection around in your back pocket. Despite the Amazon Kindle making the idea of the e-book reader popular, this particular device has been in use for a good number of years now. Many people believe that they don’t need an e-book reader nowadays due to tablet computers. However what you need to bear in mind is that reading on an e-reader is a much better experience and the battery lasts a lot longer. In this article we are going to take a little look at how you can choose an e-book reader that is perfect for your needs.

One of the first things that I suggest you do is head to the online book shops of the various E-Book Readers. From here you can browse the range of books that they have at their disposal as well as the various prices for each of them. Remember, not every store has all books available and thus you should find the one that covers your interests the most. You may also want to be on the lookout for companies that offer extra special prices on their e-books i.e. sometimes offering them for free. Remember, you may get an e-reader cheap but the manufacturer is certainly going to make their money back on the books sold!

One thing to bear in mind is how easy it is to get books from other sources. What many people don’t seem to realize is that devices such as the Amazon Kindle are a completely closed system. Therefore you always need to get books from Amazon which may not always be the cheapest price. Other devices are more ‘open’ and allow you to get books from wherever you want and even allow you to upload your own documents to the e-book reader for future reading!

One of the main things to consider is how many eBooks your device will be able to hold. Yes, they are quoted in the thousands however a pretty avid reader will be able to fill this up in a year, especially if they take advantage of all of the free books available and whilst you can delete books from the e-reader not everybody will want to. Get the highest amount of storage space that you can afford (most devices are around the same)

Next consider how the eBooks are delivered to your reader. Older devices could only be connected by USB but newer ones allow 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity. You will be paying more for that feature though!

One of the most important things to be on the lookout for when you purchase your eBook reader will be the screen, after all this is what you are going to be staring at the most. Consider how easy it is going to be on the eyes. Many people prefer black and white screens here however color screens are also fairly popular if you read a lot of ‘graphic novels’ and the like. `You may also want to consider how easy it is to turn pages on the device. Some have touch screens nowadays whilst others have buttons which you press to turn.

You will also need to consider how long the battery life is. Some of the better options on the market can have a battery life well into weeks, although that will of course depend on how often you use it.

Finally, consider how heavy the device is as well as the size. You want to choose the perfect fit for you!
